1963 Spyder Coupe For Sale

JUNE 2, 2001: The car is sold! But here is the car information page for your education and amusement . . .

The car started out as a very solid, running northern U.S. car with little rust. I stripped it to bare metal and repainted. Overall, I would rate the car as a good #3, being an amateur restoration. It's a great driver / show&shine car but for concours it would need detail work on paint, trim, etc. I have tried to be completely candid & critical in pointing out any shortcomings - as you can't see any of the problems in the photos.

If the car is not sold by the summer of 2001 I intend to drive it to the Corsa International Convention in Chicago, in case you are planning to be there! Certainly the car could be driven anywhere in North America, and delivery is negotiable.

If you're interested you can  Send me Email or phone me at 204 269-5216 evenings/weekends (Central time). Call me and I will call you right back so it's on my phone bill.

Front of car. Trim is in reasonable condition for a driver. Front bumper has a couple small creases and so does the "grille" strip. The grille has been painted. The bumper is not rusty.

Right front view. The right front fender was patched with new metal spot welded in place, with about a 3"x6" patch behind the wheel. New holes needed to be drilled for the emblems; the "Spyder" emblems are in good shape. The "Monza" emblems were repainted and look OK but not great. There was no rust over the headlights.

Right rear view. The paint on the entire right hand side of the car below the beltline crease looks slightly mottled in certain light, but no worse than some new cars I have seen ( the metallic silver is difficult to apply perfectly evenly )

Rear view. There was a rust hole below the bumper on the left hand side; there is a spot welded patch about 16"x5" extending to the left, from the middle of the bumper. The center bumper bracket is not bolted in place; the welded nut is still in place but it is under the patch. The car was involved in a minor rear end collision at some point in it's life; there is some bondo between the license plate and the right hand backup light. There is some bondo in the engine lid above this spot as well. The right hand tail light lens is cracked and repaired; the lenses are new though. The housings have some corrosion, scratches, etc. The lower air exit grille is 64 style, and is a bit beat up but still shiny. The rear bumper is in good shape with no dents or rust.

Left rear view. There was a crease in the body just above the left hand taillight which was pulled out without drilling any holes. There is also a small wavy spot about 2" square that shows just in front of the wheel opening, at about the height that someone could have leaned a knee against the car and made a dent. There was a crease below that, that was bondoed before paint.

Left front view. The left front fender was not rusty at all and required no repair before paint. There was no rust over the headlights as common on these cars.

Interior. The door weatherstrip is complete but old & hard. New interior panels, seat upholstery, kick panels, and carpet was installed. The headliner and sunvisors are original and should be replaced. The car originally had a padded dash; it was in such poor shape that it was removed and the dash painted, along with the rest of the interior.

Front seats showing new seat covers. Note that the door jamb area as well as the hinge area was not rusty and was repainted when the rest of the car was done.

Rear seat area. Panels, carpet, seat upholstery is new. The cardboard package shelf needs to be replaced; this item is available from the parts vendors. The ashtrays, coat hooks, etc. show some rust and pitting.

View of Clark's door panel. The armrest bases were sanded and painted with "bumper chrome" paint, they look fine but it is not original. The pads are not cracked or torn.

Instrument panel. Odometer shows about 12,500 miles; no idea if that means 112,500 or if it was replaced somewhere along the way. I've put about 9000 miles on the car since I got it about three years ago. All gauges, lights, horn, wipers, washers, etc. work. The cigarette lighter socket works ( I use it for my cell phone ) but I don't have a working lighter. The turn signals do not cancel after a right turn. The steering column and steering wheel was not repainted when the rest of the interior was done. The instrument panel face is slightly pitted, I sanded it on a block to get rid of the worst pits and keep the brushed look, and it looks OK.

Glovebox. The door and edge molding have some scratches. The glovebox latch and light work. The glovebox is on a different key from the rest of the car; I replaced all the locks with those from a 40k mile parts car I had, but the parts car did not have a glovebox lock. I have the owner's manual, Turbo manual, etc. The radio is a Radio Shack AM/FM cassette ( see my feature, Modern Stereo in Early Corvair  ). I have the original radio for the car.

Engine area. The battery box and rain gutter on the left side has been replaced due to rust. The battery box is a functional reproduction but it's not the same as original. The engine has been rebuilt. It is a 150hp turbo with all the proper numbers for the 63 Spyder but I can't guarantee that it is the original engine for this car. It has an electronic ignition conversion and electric choke conversion. Starts easily and runs great, a Corvair expert drove it and said that it was an exceptionally smooth engine.

Trunk area. The paint on the underside of the trunk lid is original & it is what I used for a colour match. I have done no work yet to restore the trunk area. There is some minor surface rust but no perforation, no panel replacement would be necessary. There was a rusty spot under the right front corner of the trunk lid ( on the fender ) which was repaired with a brazed patch. The seams at the lower front corners of the wheel wells need to be cleaned up and resealed before painting.

Left front wheel. The front tires ( 187/70-13 Motomaster SE ) are about a year old; the rears ( 195/70-13 Cooper Lifeliner II ) were on the car when I got it but are hardly used. The hubcaps have been repainted and are in good shape; the wheels are still the original silver for the car - they have never been painted since new - but could use repainting.

Windshield. The windshield has a wiper arc and some sandblasting but has no cracks or large stone bruises. It has a new gasket but still leaks a bit, it needs to be sealed with a sealer pump such as Clark's sells. There is a scratch under one of the wiper arms where it contacted the chrome molding at one time but otherwise the molding is in good shape.
